Grindrod improves performance through employee engagement

In high-pressure logistics environments, where cross-border clearing errors can carry significant financial and reputational risks, operational success depends not only on technical capability but also on employee mindset and engagement. When underperformance is driven by low engagement rather than a lack of skills, addressing the underlying employee experience becomes critical. This was the challenge faced by Grindrod Komatipoort, which partnered with Free To Grow to shift its workplace culture from passive compliance to greater personal ownership and accountability.
Through a layered intervention combining the WorkQ, LeadQ and WorkQ Bytes programmes, employees were encouraged to reconnect with their purpose, while leaders were equipped with practical tools to intentionally lead, coach and support their teams as part of their everyday work.
The initiative delivered measurable results. More than 90% of employees shifted from disengagement towards greater internal commitment. In addition, 100% of participants reported confidence in applying their new skills, 97% reported increased motivation to contribute, and 93% reported feeling more connected to the organisation.
By equipping leaders to nurture growth and embedding practical weekly habits to sustain momentum, Grindrod Komatipoort was able to translate employee engagement into improved operational outcomes — including fewer errors, stronger collaboration and an enhanced client experience.
